Heating Up
The Women’s Golf team is on a hot streak as of late, and will look to continue their streak into the State Tournament.
The women’s golf team officially finished their regular season on Sept. 14., and they ended on a high note. The team faced off against Lawrence Central and Lawrence North at Maple Creek Country Club, and came away with a victory, beating out Lawrence Central by just 5 strokes with a score of 199.
The team has had no shortage of success recently, as along with the win in their last match of the season, the team took second place in the annual City Alliance Championship, which was held on Sept. 12 at South Grove Golf Course. Beating out Bishop Chatard by only one stroke, the team was bested only by Heritage Christian as they put up a score of 382, compared to the Eagles’ 371.
The team’s impressive performance in the City Championship was headlined by four top 15 finishers. Junior Tillie Browning led the way, taking fourth and posting a score of 91. She was followed by fellow junior Jacquie Piper as the team’s two top 10 finishers. Piper took seventh and shot a 95. Junior Izzy Marasco took 11th place, shooting a 97. Senior Allison Haug was not far behind, as she shot a 99, good for 13th place overall.
The team will look to continue its success into the State Tournament. They will begin what could prove to be along run on Sept. 19, when they will compete in Sectional 15. As the host team, the Irish will be at a bit of an advantage. They will be playing at their home course, Maple Creek. They will compete alongside Heritage Christian, Bishop Chatard, Crispus Attucks, Lawrence Central, Lawrence North, North Central, Park Tudor, Warren Central. The match will begin at 8:30 a.m.
The Irish will look to improve on their result from last season, when they came in fourth in the Sectional meet, just one spot away from advancing to Regionals.
