Spring sports update: Baseball
As of April 20, the baseball team’s record 6-2-1. They started off their season on March 30, when they tied North Central, 6-6. The team then went on a five-game winning streak, which included a 14-3 win over rival Roncalli. This came just before losses to Zionsville and Fort Wayne Homestead and a win versus Homestead.
Offensively, the team is led by sophomore and Virginia Tech commit J.T. Stiner (catcher), who leads the team with nine hits and 12 RBI. Senior Henry Birk has impressed on the mound with a 2-1 record, and his 15 strikeouts lead the team. The team hopes to defend their City championship in the upcoming tournament and carry that into the State tournament.
Upcoming: The team will face Brebeuf Jesuit on April 22 at 5:30 p.m. at Brunette Park. They will then travel to Noblesville to play the Millers on April 26 at 7 p.m. On April 29, the team will play Columbus North at Brunette Park at 5:30 p.m. On April 30, when they will face Franklin Community at 1 p.m. at Brunette Park.
From Head Coach Mr. Ed Freije ‘99: “We have a good group of upperclassmen and underclassmen, guys with experience, but also quite a few guys with minimal experience. We need to continue to grow and develop together, while striving to be more consistent in all aspects of the game. We’re going to continue to work to be physically and mentally stronger, as the season progresses, in order for us to be playing our best baseball in May and June.”
