Volleyball team wins Sectional, preps for Regional
Irish will face top-ranked Yorktown on Oct. 23
The women’s volleyball team is on a hot streak, as the Irish have won their last six games. The team takes its momentum into the Regional on Oct. 23 after capturing the Sectional at North Central on Oct. 16.
Head Coach Mrs. Mary Hemer ‘09 said she was pleased with the team’s performances throughout the Sectional, at which they beat Warren Central, North Central and New Palestine, all in three sets. Hemer said, “Our middles have been doing a fantastic job, and that’s (senior) Katie Bremer and (sophomore) Taylor Lewis. They did fantastic. Our setter has also been doing a great job. That’s junior Mallory Dills.” Hemer also commended the performances of seniors Caroline Kubacki and Raven Rayford.
The team will face off against top-ranked Yorktown in the Greenfield-Central Regional. Hemer said, “They’re definitely a very tough team. Their strength is definitely ball control. They will just wait and let you make mistakes and start to get frustrated and they’ll beat you with that ball control. They just don’t make many mistakes.”
Coach Hemer and her staff and team are preparing for Yorktown by looking back at their season. Hemer said, “We’ve been watching a lot of our film to see how they’ll try to beat us on (Oct. 23). So I think that really the key is (that) everything’s on the line. We don’t really have the choice to lose.”
Hemer and the assistant coaches are using this film to create a plan to help their team pull off the upset. Hemer said, “We’ll have some strategy things that we will put into place as a team. But other than that, we’re just going to leave it all out on the court and make sure we’re playing our game.”
The team is ready and has nothing to lose going into the Regional. Hemer said, “We’re excited, and I think the girls are ready for this. We’re playing the best volleyball we’ve played all year.”
