Fall sports update: Women’s volleyball
All three women’s volleyball teams — the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity — captured City championships. The varsity beat rival Bishop Chatard on Oct. 7 to win its title.
Upcoming: The team competed in the opening round of Sectional play on Oct. 14 at North Central, sweeping Warren Central 25-4, 25-9, 25-10. The team now will face North Central in the Sectional semifinal on Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. in the North Central gym. If the Irish win, they will battle either New Palestine or Lawrence North on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. for the Sectional championship.
Team goals: According to Head Coach Mrs. Mary Hemer ’09, “We’ve beaten certain teams that we aimed to beat at the beginning of the season. We also won the City championship, which was a goal of ours.” Their goals for the rest of the season include winning Sectional and Regional titles and advancing as far as possible in the State tournament, the coach said.
From Coach Hemer: “Our team is really starting to hit our stride offensively and defensively. We are becoming extremely scrappy and will out work a lot of our opponents. I’m so excited to see what the girls can do in the State tournament.”
