Now that the application deadline for membership in the National Honor has passed, faculty moderators Mrs. Lisa Ford and Mrs. Elizabeth Wissler are reading and reviewing the applications for membership from the classes of 2021 and 2022. 

The applications are still being processed, and the goal is to communicate admission decisions as soon as possible, Ford said. 

Juniors and seniors received information about joining the National Honor Society, an organization that emphasizes academic excellence, leadership skills and community service.

Each school year at the start of the second semester, NHS moderators invite eligible high school students to apply to be a part of this nationally recognized organization. However, there is one requirement for applying: your cumulative GPA must be at least a 3.6. Any junior or senior who meets this requirement is permitted to fill out the application.

The National Honor Society application process includes one long essay, two shorter ones and a letter of recommendation. The essay prompts revolve around leadership and service, allowing applicants to share any positions or opportunities they have had as well as tell of their service experiences.

As for the letter of recommendation, there are a couple of guidelines to which applicants should adhere. The letter cannot be written by a parent, coach or teacher.

Accepted students will be expected to exemplify the NHS pillars of service, character, scholarship, leadership. Students in this program will be tasked with earning 10 points in order to wear gold National Honor Society cords with their caps and gowns and to be specially recognized in the commencement program.  Points are earned by engaging in school service opportunities communicated by the NHS moderators.

Students will be notified of their acceptance as soon as possible, and they will be required to participate in the induction ceremony.  This ceremony has tentatively been scheduled for April 11 at 5 p.m. in the Welch Activity Center.  Only NHS members and those adults participating in the ceremony will be allowed to be physically present, but the ceremony will be live streamed for all to see, Ford said.
