Women’s basketball wins Sectional opener
Irish score 56-47 victory over Warren Central
The women’s basketball team, coached by Mrs. Lisa Finn, won the opening game of the Class 4A Sectional on Feb. 2, as they beat Warren Central 56-47 during the tournament’s opening round, which was played at North Central.
About the Sectional game victory, Finn said, “It felt good to have a team win, because everyone pretty much did their part. And I think it proved that when it’s tournament time, anybody can really be successful.”
Although Warren Central had the better record going into the game, the Irish scoring got the better of the Warriors throughout the game. Senior Courtney Fields had 17 points and junior Katie Bremer added 15 points in the Sectional victory. According to Finn, the team’s free throw shooting was what ensured the victory. She said, “I think we made 14 free throws in the fourth quarter, which sealed the deal.”
The team’s next game will be on Feb. 5 in the Sectional semifinal against defending State champion Lawrence North. The game will played at North Central High School at 8 p.m. There are attendance limits for the game. Cathedral was allotted 50 tickets, so only the families of the players will be allowed into the game.
Lawrence North has a record of 16-8 this season, while the Irish are 11-11. Even though Lawrence North has a better record, Finn believes that if her team plays good defense, they can pull off a victory. She said, “The one thing that we’ll really work on is finding Jayla Smith, because she’s the best player for LN.” Finn said that her team’s guards, Fields, senior Clara Lee and senior Nyla Bingham, will have to play great defense in order to slow the game down due to Lawrence North’s fast-paced play.
If the Irish were to win on Friday, they would face the winner of Lawrence Central (10-10) and North Central (22-2) in the Sectional championship on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.
