As Mission Mondays provide more time for extracurriculars through virtual learning, clubs and activities are beginning to open back up with their callout meetings.

The initial speech and debate team callout will be Sept. 17 at 3:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Socially distancing and masks will be required. But there also will be an online callout for students in the online community on Sept. 21 at 2:30 p.m.

Speech and debate Head Coach Mrs. Jeanne Malone, said, “The speech and debate callout is for any student who is interested in joining our team. We welcome all students regardless of experience. We want students who are ready to make new friends, have fun, and learn new skills.”

Opportunities to grow the skills needed to participate are offered after school. “Our debaters participate in world school debate and Congressional debate. There are 14 speech events including humor, drama, duo, poetry, original oratory. Students are expected to practice at least twice a week. We offer three to four practices a week after school from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. Our team practices in Kelly Hall in Room 4238. Our meets run from November to March and this year our meets will all be virtual,” Malone said.

“Speech and debate is about helping each student find their voice. Our purpose is to help the student find their voice and reach their potential,” the coach added.

This past summer nine students had qualified for the national finals and the world school team placed 60th out of 350 international teams.

If a student can not attend the callout but wishes to be part of the speech and debate team, they should contact Coach Malone at [email protected].
